We are a family dojo. Most schools that offer "family training" accept students of all ages
but put the adults and kids in different classes, sometimes on different evenings. At KoSho
Karate Pantano, we have classes that allow you to train with your child. In our all-ages
classes, everyone works together but at their own level. For partner drills you work with
people your own age and size but on the same deck with family and friends of all ages.
Kids learn self-discipline and focus by watching the example of the adults in the class. And
adults find the joy and enthusiasm of the kids contagious. Special family rates are
available.
We train you for your life and your goals. We realize that you will never be a medieval
samurai warrior, and we don't treat you like one. But the mind-body skills we teach draw on
a wide range of sources: medieval warrior codes, the traditions of the martial arts, as well
as the most modern brain and behavior research. Our purpose is to build not just physical
skills but also goal-setting, concentration, courage, anger and fear management, personal
honor, and the ability to face what life throws at you. For kids, we teach skills for managing
bully problems.
Shuri-ryu is a combination of traditional Okinawan karate and real-world self defense
techniques. The style has been used by law enforcement officers, military personnel,
defense attorneys, mental health professionals, teachers of at-risk youth, and many others
who face a dangerous public on a near daily basis. At KoSho Karate Pantano, you will learn
to defend yourself using techniques that are tested and proven.
Students are promoted through a rank system that's based on checklists. When they learn
everything on their checklist and have time in grade, they can move up to the next rank.
Students who need extra time to master their skills can have it without stigma. Students
who are eager to promote can test during the next class after they finish their checklist,
without waiting for the other students in their class. We have no "social promotion."
Everyone is required to master the material on their checklist to the best of their ability.
Consequently, our ranks reflect personal achievement in each and every one of our
students.
At our dojo we honor two fundamental rights: You have the right to say "no" to any
technique you believe you cannot complete safely, and you have the right to decide what
level of contact you want used against you on any given day. You are expected to stretch
yourself, to expand the limits of your courage and abilities, but never at the expense of
your personal safety.
There's no other way to say it-- a large part of what makes KoSho Pantano special is the
people. The teachers bring not just martial skills to their work, but also other abilities.
Susan is a writer and has been teaching something or another since 1974. She is the
author of two books on the martial arts, with another two in the works. Laura has degrees
in administration and management, is a certified personal trainer, and is a parent and
grandparent. But beyond just the staff, we are a unique community, a community of people
who are committed not just to our own growth as martial artists and people but to our
training partners' growth as well. We take our training seriously, and we have a lot of fun.
